One paddy ban won't stop the bad show
This blunt instrument of banning Pusa-44 to deal with air pollution, a multifaceted problem, may fail to deliver results. Instead, it is certain to anger the state's vocal and politically influential farming community. In fact, farmers ignored the government's request not to sow Pusa-44 this season. While the variety's yields are substantially more than those of others, Pusa-44 requires much more water and chemicals. But free electricity and water 'take care' of the extra costs.
