No lockdown for politics

There seems to be no break from politicking as politicians continue their power games during this MCO.
POLITICALLY, the difference between the movement control order in 2020 and the Emergency rule in 2021 is that there was a political distancing during the move to flatten the Covid-19 curve last year.
This year, there’s no political lockdown even though the country is in a state of emergency.
Early last year, the Pakatan Harapan government fell and Perikatan Nasional rose when Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin was appointed the Prime Minister.
To flatten the pandemic, the Perikatan government declared MCO soon after, on March 18,2020. During the MCO, there was not much political noise even though Pakatan Plus politicians felt that Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad should be Prime Minister for the second time as he had the numbers.

PETALING JAYA: Upko president Datuk Seri Wilfred Madius Tangau has invited lawmakers who recently abandoned the Perikatan Nasional government to join Pakatan Plus.
Pakatan Plus is the moniker for a loose coalition that includes Pakatan Harapan and the yet-to-be-registered Parti Pejuang Tanah Air (Pejuang) led by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
In a statement on Wednesday (Jan 13), the Tuaran MP appealed to his fellow parliamentary colleagues who do not have any ongoing court cases to join Pakatan Plus in order to discuss alternative policies for the post-Perikatan government.
"Whether we would sit next to each other in the future as parliamentarians, we have a duty to offer workable and broad-based policies for millions of suffering Malaysians when the PM damages their livelihoods just to save his job," he said.

He added the ceasefire between the government and the Opposition could include no federal or state elections (except for Sarawak whose election must be held by Aug 21,2021).

Rumblings in the opposite aisle

Plan backfired: Can Anwar rise against the latest political hurdle?
In an ironic plot twist, Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is now facing a no-confidence challenge after Budget 2021 was successfully passed in Parliament.
“WHO else can be Opposition leader? You tell me, ” an opposition MP asked when we were discussing PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s leadership of the Opposition bloc.
It was a day after the Opposition lost its bid to defeat Budget 2021. The Bill was passed when 111 Perikatan Nasional government MPs voted for it, 108 Opposition MPs against it, and one MP abstained.
The irony of the Budget 2021 vote is that instead of it being a de facto confidence motion for Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, it has turned into a no-confidence test for Anwar.

Kuala Lumpur: The plan to revive the so-called “grand coalition” of Opposition parties dubbed Pakatan Harapan (PH) Plus is hampered by the lack of communication between Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal, sources said.
Several coalition sources confirmed to Malay Mail that that there has been no “meaningful” cooperation or official bloc meetings involving the PKR president, Parti Pejuang Tanah Air chairman, and Parti Warisan Sabah president ― even before the final vote on Budget 2021.
“The communication is minimal, involving several individuals. There was no top level meeting to make concrete decisions to strengthen the Opposition as a bloc,” said a source from the Sabah-based Warisan.

Forget defections, prepare for next GE, Anwar told

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah opposition Upko wants opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to be policy-orientated and prepare for the next general election, instead of focusing on recapturing Putrajaya through defections.
Upko president Datuk Seri Wilfred Madius Tangau said in a statement on Thursday (Dec 17) that it was time for Pakatan Harapan Plus to put aside plans to take back the Federal Government and focus on concrete policy ideas for the benefit of Malaysians.
“In 2021, Pakatan Plus must remake itself from 'number-orientated' to 'policy-orientated', ” he said.
"Pakatan Plus must boldly admit its core strategic mistake since February: focusing on recapturing federal power with claimed defections.

KUALA LUMPUR: After failing to defeat Budget 2021 on Tuesday (Dec 15), DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng (
pic) and Amanah president Mohamad Sabu have urged for a “political reset” in order to unite the Opposition ahead of the upcoming general election.
“There must now be a political reset to focus on building a more united Opposition grouping that can fight as one in the next general election.
“Pakatan leaders must put aside past baggage so that Pakatan can expand to Pakatan Plus with a formidable force of 108 MPs.
“With 108 Pakatan Plus MP as a solid grouping, anything is still possible,” the duo said in a joint statement issued on Facebook Thursday (Dec 17).
