National labels police budget reduction 'atrocious', Labour fires back

But the government is defending the numbers, saying some funds are still under negotiation, and the police are still better off than they were under National.
Police Commissioner Andrew Coster has $2.189 billion at his disposal this year, including a small boost of $12m dedicated to crime prevention.
But overall the budget has dropped from last year, with the road safety programme taking a $63m hit, investigations losing $4.5m, and primary response also suffering a $5.5m drop.

Man arrested over threats made to MP Simeon Brown

Police said the man was arrested without incident today at a Lower Hutt property.
"I would like to acknowledge the outstanding work of our staff from both the Criminal Investigation Branch in Counties Manukau, where the original complaint was received, and the team in Lower Hutt who located the alleged offender today," Wellington Field Crime Manager Detective Inspector Darrell Harpur said in a statement.
"They worked closely together under urgency to get this result."
The man is due to appear in the Hutt Valley District Court on 13 May and faces a charge of threatening to kill.
