ANC uMkhonto we Sizwe veteran Gregory Nthatisi was elected as acting mayor of Mangaung after court sets aside Papi Mokoena's election.
When newly elected Mangaung mayor Papi Mokoena was scheduled to announce members of his mayoral committee, the ANC in the Free State successfully interdicted him from occupying the higher office.
The ANC has since obtained a court interdict nullifying the Mangaung Metro council sitting and the election of AASD's Papi Mokoena.
The Free State High Court in Bloemfontein on Wednesday morning started hearing an urgent application by the African National Congress (ANC) to challenge a Mangaung council sitting that resulted in Afrikan Alliance for Social Democrats president Papi Mokoena being elected mayor of the troubled municipality. Besides petitioning the court to declare the 14 April council sitting unlawful, the ANC has also asked the court to interdict and restrain Mokoena from performing any mayoral acts.
The party brought an urgent application before the Bloemfontein High Court, challenging both the sitting which saw Mokoena elected as mayor, and seeking an interdict against him from performing any mayoral duties.
