Optical amplifiers have transformed optical communication technology by eliminating the need for photoelectric and electro-optical conversions, enabling direct amplification of optical signals.

Researchers developed a special type of amplifier that uses a technique known as squeezing to amplify quantum signals by a factor of 100 while reducing the noise that is inherent in quantum systems by an order of magnitude. Their device is the first to demonstrate squeezing over a broad frequency bandwidth of 1.75 gigahertz, nearly two orders of magnitude higher than other architectures.

Researchers at the Chalmers University of Technology have found an approach to design integrated waveguides for optical parametric amplification that operate in the telecommunication band. This provides a new route to noise-free amplification of optical signals that could be used for a variety of telecommunications applications.
