For a minute you and say, really? is that safe? well, they re not going to go up in a 747, they re probably not even going to go up in a jet. a prop plane can survive a trip around an ash cloud a lot better than a jet can. with jets, this is the thing to stress, is that, you know, pulling that particle, those particles, through a jet engine, that s the really dangerous thing, so it s just a commonsense precaution that you wouldn t put a planeful of passengers in harm s way, but a group of trained scientists in a specially designed plane can probably do it. jay ford with popular science. thank you. thank you. we are joined live from jfk s international airport, and andrew, i can only imagine what the situation s like out there. why don t you tell us what s going on? reporter: this is the time of year when maybe there was a thunderstorm causing snarled travel across the country. this is not like that. volcanic ash, people have no idea if they can go to europe or take the vaca ....

Of lava spewing out there, but this is the big issue right now. a cloud of ash that s taken up the airspace from 20,000 to 35,000 feet right where jetliners usually fly and this is drifting east and south and that s playing havoc with europe, grounding planes and closing the airports all over the place. why is that? well, first, it s because this can look like normal dust up in the air or normal clouds so it s impossible to fly into by mistake, but this is nothing like normal dust. this is so fine that it can clog up nozzles and joints on airplanes and more importantly, it can be sucked into jet engines where it undergoes a dangerous change. here s the model of a jet engine. it takes in air here, these blades compress that air and mixes with fuel and ignites and fires out of the back and that makes it go forward, but this process is so hot, it will melt volcanic dust. here s a particle of volcanic dust right there and when it ....

Later today. we will see. this is the problem. we showed it to you yesterday. highly magnified particle of volcanic ash. this is your brain on drugs. this is what a particle of ash looks like in the air. it melts. even if you fly through a little bit, that ice and that glass that s on the back of the plane and in the jet is going to stay there a very long time so you can t fly through any of it, ever. that s what we re worried about because as it dissipates, when you see it right from the volcano, it s dark, it s black. you can see it when it gets hundreds of miles over. it starts to look like a cloud and you can t see it as well. i like your cancelation idea because i don t want to be the person on the first flight. all right. we ll continue on this with chad. we ll get an update in the next hour. can you imagine being told that you can t visit your loved one in hospital? they want you the visit. you want to visit with them. they re in serious health and you can t go. that i ....

Of the airports in the uk are closed. correct. this is not precautionprecautio. this is a mandatory do-not-fly zone literally, because this is a particle blonwn up many thousands of times. you don t want that going through your car s engine, let alone a jet engine, and this because it s ash melts back down into lava and then like glass, like you said earlier, like ob siddian, and then it deposits itself on the back of the jet and the jet engine on the plane can choke itself. yep. look what happens here. you hit the particles, i know they re small, but you hit them with the plane, it scours the plane, you can t even see out of the windows at all and it can also just scour all the paint off and actually put dents in it if it hits it hard enough. so, you can there are literally there are mandatory reasons why you don t fly in volcanic ash. right. and this is the time. we ll stay on that. we ll be back with you in a minute. there have been instances where planes have had all ....

May just take us back to the very birth of our universe, but this breakthrough is not just about the past, but our future. it could unlock all kinds of scientific mysteries around us. cnn s atika shubert shows us why researchers around the world are buzzing. reporter: it took 16 years and more than $10 billion, but finally, the large hadron collider, the biggest scientific experiment in history has yielded results. scientists watched in suspense as two particle beams traveling at close to the speed of light, collided at the highest-ever recorded energy. this, in essence, recreates the big bang, the conditions at the very beginning of our universe. we really are starting physics and this is the really the first timing which we enter a new territory, exploring it would be a fantastic adventure. we are just at the beginning and ....
