The rising number of COVID-19 patients in Maharashtra has presented another challenge to civic bodies in major cities on dealing with disposal of biomedical waste, which has also increased substantially.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has seen a spike in the number of cases with around 6,84,048 positive patients since 2020. The financial capital produces around 22 to 23 MT biomedical waste every day.

Pune: A group of 60 frontline staff who are performing a major responsibility in the fight against Covid in the district are feeling ignored.
These are workers at the Common Bio-Medical Waste Treatment Facilities. There are two biomedical garbage processing plants in the district, one for the city located at Sangawadi and another for Pimpri-Chinchwad at Yashwantrao Chavan Municipal Hospital, which have the responsibility of collecting biomedical waste from 5,500 healthcare facilities and then incinerating or recycling it.

Pune: Covid biomedical waste weighing 8.6 lakh kg has been produced across 160 hospitals of Pune in between March 20-October 20. The everyday amount of Covid biomedical waste has reduced in the past two months because of lesser positive cases.
But hospitals are unhappy with the rates that are being charged for waste disposal. This is unfair and officials would file a case in the court against these rates, Dr Dhananjay Kelkar, MD of Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital told The Indian Express.

Pune: 8.6 lakh kg Covid biomedical waste generated, hospitals protest 'unfair' rate as they attract large disposal bills

Dr H K Sale, executive director of Noble hospital, said they received a bill of Rs 40 lakh from April to August. “There is a price cap on treating Covid patients. We have faced several issues like staff shortage, and have had to coax staff to stay on and assist with treatment. We cannot afford to pay such huge sums and will pay at the rate prior to the Covid pandemic,” Dr Sale said.
According to Dr Madhur Rao, senior deputy medical administrator, KEM hospital, the hike was unfair. “We cannot sustain paying Rs 100 rate per kg at all; this is uneconomical,” he said.
