pelley: cops in the u.s. and europe have broken up a network of crooks who helped other criminals hijack computers around the world. here s jeff pegues. reporter: police in ukraine raided an apartment and arrested this man believed to be connected to the cyber theft ring that investigators have dubbed the avalanche network. authorities say the network had computer servers in at least four countries and stole hundreds of millions of dollars. the acting u.s. attorney for the western district of pennsylvania. we successfully identified 250,000 infected computers in 189 different countries ....

This weekend, the u.s. government gave up control of the so-called internet address book. tony dokoupil explains what that is and how it might impact the internet. reporter: no one owns the internet, but for nearly 20 years, the u.s. government has controlled the official list of every web site address. as of today, the government s control is no more. the job now belongs solely to icann, a nonprofit based in los angeles and advised by a global committee that includes china, russia, and iran. when you look up a web site, your computer looks for the information on another machine, like one of these. and it uses a unique identifying number, a bit like a home address, for the internet. if icann delete an address, it could, in effect, delete a web site, a threat that caught the eye of texas senator ted cruz. russia, china, and iran don t have a first amendment. they don t protect free speech, and they actively censor the ....
