Relying on a wood burning stove to keep warm, and the kindness of fellow community members to bring them food, Marlene Tcho and Rose Dawastare from English River First Nation, are camping out until they get the answers they want from their elected leaders. Wednesday marks day eight of their peaceful protest, roughly 50 feet from the steps of the band office. The Patch Wine and Spirits is located on the English River First Nation urban reserve in the Grasswood community, just south of the city. The store officially opened on Monday. I m really excited about this, said Jason Allen, director of retail for the Des Nedhe Group English River s economic development body. This is kind of something that I ve been wanting to expand the retail division for English River, and I believe it s a great opportunity. ....
SASKATOON The Patch Wine and Spirits, Saskatchewan’s first Indigenous-owned liquor store, has opened on the English River First Nation urban reserve in the community of Grasswood, just south of Saskatoon. The retail outlet is the first of its kind on reserve land and a new addition to the retail portfolio of Indigenous parent company Des Nedhe Group, according to a news release. Building on the success of adjacent, Indigenous-owned businesses, Jason Allen, director of retail, had a vision to expand services and opportunities, the release said. “This feels like a real progression to what we already offer. The residents of Corman Park won’t have to drive through the city, and it offers a tax savings for Status individuals.” ....

In a news release, the company behind the store highlighted the convenience and potential benefits to members. “The residents of Corman Park won’t have to drive through the city, and it offers a tax savings for Status individuals,” said Jason Allen, the director of retail for Des Nedhe Group, English River’s economic development body. Allen noted that the store will also be providing a section dedicated to Indigenous-made wine, spirits and beer, and an Indigenous art installation. ....
