Story updated at 5:49 p.m. Wednesday: Heavy rainfall swept over Lawrence on Tuesday afternoon between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m., causing pools of water on streets. Brandon Drake, a forecaster with the National Weather Service in Topeka, said around 3 p.m. that the heaviest rainfall of the day had likely passed, but that rain was expected to continue throughout the evening in scatters until around midnight. The heavy rain caused some traffic issues and sent numerous garbage bins into roadways.
