Thursday, 11 February 2021 Nils Van der Poel and Antoinette de Jong earned maiden titles at the International Skating Union (ISU) World Speed Skating Championships in Heerenveen. Sweden's Van der Poel beat Dutch home favourite Patrick Roest in the men's 5,000 metres to clinch his first world title.  Van der Poel crossed the line in a personal best of 6mins 08.395secs, with Roest trailing in 6:10.050.
