The eleventh day of the Lunar fortnight as per the Hindu calendar is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Referred to as Ekadashi, the eleventh day is meant for paying obeisance to the Lord by observing a fast that spans over three days. Each Ekadashi has a specific name, significance and a Katha (legend) associated with it. The eleventh day of Paush Maas, Shukla Paksha (waxing period or the brighter phase of the Lunar cycle) is known as Paush Putrada Ekadashi. The term Putrada means 'giver of children' and hence, couples who wish to have a child observe this vrat. Nonetheless, anyone who wants to worship Lord Vishnu can observe this vrat. The fasting starts on the eve of Ekadashi (i.e. on Dashami Tithi night) and continues until Dwadashi (twelfth day) morning sunrise. On Ekadashi Tithi, prayers are offered to Lord Vishnu.
