The spring/summer of 2020 forced many of us to evaluate and prioritize our political, social and practical activity. Consequently, when activism driven by social injustice collided with COVID-19 restrictions and conservative mindsets, the results manifested as civil unrest and/or personal resentment across many parts of the state and nation. PENDLETON — A third principal from the Pendleton School District is resigning this year. At a Tuesday, April 6, Pendleton School Board meeting, members approved the resignation of Washington Elementary School Principal Aimee VanNice. Prior to arriving in Pendleton in 2012, VanNice had been an elementary school teacher and instructional curriculum leader in Bend. She was the principal of McKay Creek Elementary School for several years before taking over Washington in 2015 as it transitioned into becoming a larger school. PENDLETON — Melissa Sandven’s three-year tenure as the principal of Pendleton High School is coming to an end. At a Monday, March 8, meeting, the Pendleton School Board is set to approve Sandven’s resignation, which will go into effect June 30. Sandven said she enjoyed her time in Pendleton, but with most of her family located west of the Cascades, she felt like she needed to return to the west side of Oregon. “I couldn’t go another year away from them,” she said.
