dangerous situation for those suffering through record-breaking heat. triple digit temperatures are making life absolutely miserable for about 100 million americans this weekend. that s about a third of our population. here s a look at today s predicted highs across the united states. let s go first to cnn s reporter live in atlanta in a cooling center where the heat is expected, nick, to hit 106 degrees. that makes me think back to the record here in atlanta in 2007. let s talk about how dangerous this is and what officials are doing. i know there are officials in missouri investigating three deaths that may be caused by heat already. this is a massive situation across atlanta. 22 states affected by this heat advisory. we have everywhere from little rock, arkansas, to greensboro, north carolina. i believe we have video of greensboro, north carolina, under that excessive heat warning. and in little rock, i m sorry, tulgsa, oklahoma, they re handing out portable air-co ....

john fugelson and john cain. a lot to talk about this morning. that was in unison, i like it. we ll ask the congresswoman about it. this morning mitt romney turning his full attention to the general election after sweeping yesterday s gop primaries in connecticut, delaware, new york, pennsylvania and rhode island. a better america begins tonight. tonight is the start of a new campaign to unite every american who knows in their heart that we can do better. the last few years have been the best that barack obama can do. but it s not the best america can do. tonight is the beginning of the end of the disappointments of the obama year. but romney hasn t quite clinched the number of nominations just yet. right now he has 764 of the 1,144 needed. newt gingrich 141 and ron paul 75. romney supporter congresswoman mary bono mach. nice to see you this morning. you, too. rick santorum was holding on for a long time and the cultural conservative kind of vote for so long now ....

The street to make. if there is a silver lining, it is that this has opened up this dialogue and it is now a national conversation. one person we have not heard from up until this point, is the president, would you like to hear him speak about this? i think that the president really is speaking through his department of justice which is investigating this case. and i really got to go back to this point, any chief who so misinterprets a law of this magnitude, a law that gives permissions to citizens under certain situations to use lethal force, that chief is a danger to his community. because the reality is that no reasonable person could look at this law and think that it gave a license to george zimmerman to hunt down and kill a little boy. the reality is that chief needs to be fired. yes, he needs to go. we should say that the vote ....

an important story just into cnn. the still unidentified u.s. soldier blamed for this week s deadly massacre in afghanistan now has a high powered lawyer. the prominent seattle attorney john henry brown who once representeded serial killer ted bundy. he spoke to tracy wyann. it s a tragedy all the way around. no question about that. i think it s of interest that we have a soldier who has an exemplariry record, decorated soldier, who was injured in iraq to his brain and to his body, and then despite that was sent back. i think that s an issue. i think it s a concern. i think the message for the public in general is that he s one of our boys. we need to treat him fairly. casey wian from pierce county, washington. casey, listening to the attorney there he didn t say my client didn t do it. he seemed to say his defense would be this soldier never, because of his injuries in iraq in 2010, should have been sent back to the battlefield. reporter: well, he did not say tha ....

let me just for the record be clear again, senator, so there s no misunderstanding. when it comes to the national defense of this country, the president of the united states has the authority under the constitution to act to defend this country, and we will. if it comes to an operation where we re trying to build a coalition of nations to work together to go in and operate as we did in libya or bosnia, for that matter afghanistan, we want to do it with permissions either by nato or by the international community. well, i m troubled by that. i think that, um, it does weaken the ability of the united states to lead. if we believe something ought to be done, i d be thinking we would be going more aggressively to nato and other allies seeking every ally that we can get, but i do think, ultimately, you need the legal authority from the united states of america, not from any other extraterritorial ....
