A a major face of isis and out there carrying out the horrific executions. the cutting off of the heads is just absolutely horrible, and so it is important symbolically and psychologically, and going to hurt isis in the short run as far as recruiting and takes away the image of themming being invincible, and so it is significant and i give the military a lot of credit, because we have very little if any intelligence on the ground from syria, and for them to find him and track him and kill him, if that is the case, it is an extraordinary achievement. and the coalition air strikes led by the u.s., and back up the kurdish and peshmerga operation, it seems that things are moving in the right direction, based on the nick paton walsh report that you saw. is the united states taking a more aggressive approach not only on the ground, but in the air, and some special forces were near sinjar call manage the air strikes? wolf, i hope. so i hope that the president ....

American air strike, by a drone. do people on the ground care? reporter: no, not in sinjar. the issues here are much more local. we re talking about peshmerga trying to lead a fight to push isis out of the neighborhood near the place they want to call their future homeland and already many of them do consider their homeland. for the yazidis, who used to live in sinjar, while of course jihadi john and what he did on youtube and social media caused, perhaps, the united states to decide to intervene in the fight against isis, that may have some impact on their thoughts. this is much more of a local tragedy. the yazidis live in the mountains, those who fled sin y sinjar, looking down on their town, thinking of the day they can move in. that day is much closer but they re going back to a town frankly, rubble, laden with booby traps, something of a disaster to try and house ....

As about 7,500 kurdish special forces, peshmerga, and some fighters descended on the town to try to take it back. it s all about this critical supply route that flows between raqqa in syria and into mosul. sinjar literally lies right in between those two cities. and isis is able to bring weapons, fighters, money, oil, illicit oil. they were able to bring it back and forth, and use sinjar as this hub or this stopping point in between. so, of course, it s within the coalition and the iraqi security forces, the peshmerga, the kurds, especially, it s within their best interests to take back this city. sinjar came to light about a year ago, where there was this huge crisis, where there were thousands who had been chased up the mountains by isis and it s what got the u.s. involved in air strikes there in iraq. courtney kube, thank you for helping us understand that. thank you. ....

CNN The Lead With Jake Tapper November 13, 2015 21:08:00

Remarkable number of traps, roadside bombs and in fact tunnels dug under some of the roads linked up to explosive devices. a fear that maybe isis fighters disguised themselves as peshmerga and go literally underground. in fact, we were there in peshmerga they said an isis sniper fired over their heads. the peshmerga fired back. they have two injuries in their ranks. still deeply volatile inside that city, but it s definitely in peshmerga hands now. no doubt about that. very little to live off though. barely a building that hasn t been damaged, rendered unusable by the violence brought upon the city. the time when the yazidis who once lived there can actually come back is still distant, but all the same the peshmerga are in control. they ve torn huge trenches and laid big earth berms across that main route 47 between raqqa and mosul. no one s going to be using that in the foreseeable future without their permission. so at least one strategic goal ....
