A new study co-authored by UC Berkeley alumnus Huong Nguyen shows that a high percentage of coronaviruses were detected in animals meant for human consumption, presenting evidence that the spillover of zoonotic diseases may be propelled by human practices. The study was primarily funded by PREDICT, a research program launched in 2009 by the United States Agency for International Development with the goal of detecting viruses with pandemic potential.
