There may have been fencing at downtown Barrie’s Meridian Place, but that didn’t stop people from coming out Saturday to protest the current lockdown and public health measures.  Today's demonstration marked the eighth straight week of protests in downtown Barrie, which organizers have dubbed 'freedom rallies.'  A group of approximately 50 protesters  — many of whom had signs, flags and sporting other anti-lockdown messaging  — initially gathered near the Meridian Place gates that were set up Friday by the city in an attempt to deter the protest from going ahead.   BARRIE, ONT. -- Police arrested a 43-year-old Barrie man accused of brandishing a knife at the Walmart store on Bayfield Street in Barrie. Police got the call around 8 p.m. on Tuesday about a threat made and rushed to the scene. Officers quickly located the man down the street from the store with the public's help. Police said the man had been threatening a customer at the store. Officers charged the accused with weapons-related offences and uttering threats to cause bodily harm. Lockdown protesters literally stood and sat upon names of the COVID-19 dead during Saturday’s ‘freedom rally’ in downtown Barrie. Earlier that morning, someone chalked the names and ages of 100 people who have died from the virus on all levels of cement at Meridian Place, located just below Memorial Square, which honours Barrie’s war dead.
