NEWS RELEASE
In continued efforts toward reconciliation, and in solidarity and consultation with local members of the Indigenous community, the city’s 2021 Canada Day activities are being themed around our shared history and will focus on education, reconciliation and reflection.
The city encourages residents to use Canada Day as an opportunity to learn about the histories and cultures of the Indigenous peoples of this region.
As part of its recognition for National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21, the city prepared virtual programming that celebrated the heritage, diverse cultures and significant contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples, and collected community partner resources for continued learning.
Canada Day will have a different look this year in Barrie

BARRIE, ONT. Barrie city council is set to revisit a call to build a large landmark sign in the city s downtown core. The motion was first brought forth by city councillor Mike McCann earlier this year to build a large 8-foot sign reading I Heart Barrie. McCann says the idea comes from the popular Toronto sign located at Nathan Phillips Square. Every great town has a great landmark sign, says McCann. Barrie has one of the best waterfronts, I think, in the world. I think this will be a great landmark sign to unite the city and also will inspire the city, and for the worst-case scenario, it will be fun!
BARRIE, ONT. Barrie s fight to block recurring anti-lockdown protests will have to wait another week. Last Thursday, the city revealed that it had applied for an injunction to stop the person behind the protests from organizing, hosting, and participating in any further gatherings on city property. While arguments were scheduled to be heard Wednesday, the hearing has been pushed to May 27. A spokesperson for the city says the delay was agreed upon provided the organizer would not take any part in a protest in Barrie this weekend. Demonstrators started gathering at Meridian Place in early March. The moved across the street to Centennial Park in late April after the mayor closed Meridian Place by emergency order.
