A community group has launched a legal appeal against the NSW Independent Planning Commission’s (IPC’s) approval of the controversial Narrabri Gas Project, in the state’s north west.
In September, in spite of overwheming community and expert opposition, the IPC granted staged approval for the Santos-owned project, involving hundreds of CSG wells over a 95,000-hectare area near Narrabri.
The 25-year Narrabri Gas Project would contribute greenhouse gas emissions in the order of 127 million tonnes (CO2 equivalent), at a time when the science says there is an urgent need for rapid emissions reductions. ....

MELBOURNE (Reuters) - An Australian community group has launched a court challenge against Santos Ltd s A$3.6 billion ($2.7 billion) Narrabri coal seam gas project, saying an independent panel that approved the development failed to consider its climate impacts.
The action was launched by the Environmental Defenders Office, a not-for-profit legal firm, on behalf of a group of 100 residents and farmers from the town of Mullaley, about 110 kilometres (68 miles) south of Narrabri in northern New South Wales (NSW). ....

The controversial Narrabri Gas Project has hit another hurdle, with a group of North West farmers launching a legal appeal against the state government.
The Mullaley Gas and Pipeline Accord argues the Independent Planning Commission wrongly assessed the project’s climate impacts.
It comes less than a month after the SANTOS project was approved by the federal government.
The $3.6 billion project will see 850 coal seam gas wells built in the Pilliga and could provide up to half of the state’s gas needs.
