The January Manufacturing PMI
® registered 58.7 percent, down 1.8 percentage points from the seasonally adjusted December reading of 60.5 percent. This figure indicates expansion in the overall economy for the eighth month in a row after contraction in March, April, and May. The New Orders Index registered 61.1 percent, down 6.4 percentage points from the seasonally adjusted December reading of 67.5 percent. The Production Index registered 60.7 percent, a decrease of 4 percentage points compared to the seasonally adjusted December reading of 64.7 percent. The Backlog of Orders Index registered 59.7 percent, 0.6 percentage point above the December reading of 59.1 percent. The Employment Index registered 52.6 percent, 0.9 percentage point higher from the seasonally adjusted December reading of 51.7 percent. The Supplier Deliveries Index regist ....

State, feds give update on green ooze contamination site in Madison Heights

MADISON HEIGHTS, Mich. (WXYZ) — The U.S. EPA and the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy, provided an update to residents on the green ooze site in Madison Heights on Tuesday night.
It s been more than a year since green ooze began leaking out onto I-696. It was later identified as hexavalent chromium from the site of the former Electro-Plating Services in Madison Heights. EPA hands off cleanup of 'green ooze' site to Michigan environmental agency


Madison Heights A representative for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said Tuesday it had completed its emergency response to groundwater contamination at the former Electro-Plating Services, having spent $3.1 million, and will pass oversight on to state officials.
Our goal was to stabilize the site . and return the site to EGLE for long-term remediation, said Tricia Edwards of the EPA during an online update, referring to the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy. She discussed over a year s work at a very complicated site.  
Edwards said weekly monitoring for hazardous chemicals at the Madison Height site in recent months showed no imminent threat to humans or the environment. ....

Toxic contamination usually gets this dramatic only in Hollywood.
In the week before Christmas 2019, commuters on I-696 in Madison Heights were startled by a fluorescent green chemical ooze weeping from a concrete retaining wall along an earthen embankment, the substance puddling on the freeway s shoulder.
Tests later showed the ooze laden with hexavalent chromium, prolonged exposures to which can cause nasal and sinus cancers, kidney and liver damage. The source was obvious, straight up the embankment from the oozing site: Electro-Plating Services, a struggling chrome plating business long on the radar of the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for its hazardous waste mismanagement. ....
