The Indian government has informed the Supreme Court that it is prepared to hold elections in Jammu and Kashmir at any time, but the timing will be determined by the J&K Election Commission and the Election Commission of India. The government also stated that the first elections will be held for panchayats in rural areas. Additionally, the government expressed that the restoration of full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir is a temporary phenomenon and did not provide a specific timeframe for its restoration.

While announcing the schedule for Karnataka assembly elections, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar had stressed increased vigil and zero tolerance on the distribution of inducements during the electoral process.

A committee comprising the three constitutional functionaries will be in place till Parliament makes a law for these appointments, a five-judge bench said.
