The Assam government plans to introduce a Bill in December to ban polygamy, the practice of marrying multiple spouses. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that a legal committee has received positive thoughts on the ban and is drafting the Bill. Out of 149 suggestions received, 146 were in favor of banning polygamy, while three opposed it.

Assams Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, has announced that a bill to end polygamy will be introduced within the current financial year after an expert committee confirmed that the state does possess the power to draft such laws. The president is expected to give assent to any legislation, rather than the governor. Sarma revealed that the committee suggested introducing age specifications in Muslim law to ensure compliance with the POCSO Act.

Opposition parties in Assam have criticized the state government's plan to introduce a bill banning polygamy. They accuse the government of making divisive and communal comments related to the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), particularly on the subject of polygamy, while neglecting to address health, education, and transportation issues in 'char' (riverine) areas where some Muslims are believed to practice polygamy. Muslims account for just 1.9% of people in India who practice polygamy.
