A new defense attorney for the 23-year-old Armstrong, who was a teenager at the time of his parents' deaths, claimed in a motion for a new trial that he should have been tried as a juvenile and that prosecutors should have provided previous defense attorneys with information that questioned the credibility of a key witness.
Juan Carlos Garcia Rodriguez, 18, was charged with capital murder and arrested over the weekend. He is accused of killing his 11-year-old neighbor, Maria Gonzalez.
Juan Carlos Garcia-Rodriguez, 18, had recently been staying in the same apartment complex as Maria Gonzalez before leaving on Monday afternoon, two days after her death, according to Pasadena police.
Maria Gonzalez was strangled and beaten to death and also sexually assaulted on Saturday, according to the Pasadena Police Department, which said she was found by her father when he returned home from work.
The verdict came after 11 days of witness testimony. The high-profile case had dragged on for years after two previous juries could not reach a consensus on a verdict in 2019 and 2022.
