are getting this race wrong. is he confident in his ground game. he thinks it's going it turn people out. he thinks he has the infrastructure to be able to turn people out in huge numbers in these subzero temperatures. keep in mind the work that he has done here in the state of iowa over these last six months or so. he visited all of iowa's 99 counties. he got the endorsement of iowa's popular republican governor kim reynolds, his super pac says they have knocked on nearly a million doors in this state and campaign says they have got about 1700 precinct captains going to go out there tonight and help turn people out to make sure they caucus in this cold weather. he feels when the dust settles it's eventually going to be a two-man race between him and donald trump. he says nikki haley just isn't conservative enough to win the g.o.p. primary. as for trump, he says trump's too focused on himself with his personal vendettas and his concerns about loyalty with people he knows. and that he didn't deliver on past promises when he was president in 2016 through 2020. he says, look, if you pick me as the g.o.p. candidate, i can be in office for eight years.

the super pac aligned with desantis has poured millions of dollars and a lot of time into this state. desantis himself and his family have also poured a lot of time into here. he's made a big point of visiting all 99 counties and the full grassley, not the chuck grassley, the other state senator here in iowa, he spent time here with his family and he's gone to all corners of the state. i believe he's coming on -- hang on, it's just getting loud. we're just waiting for him to come on, but it's been so much time here and that will make a difference that they have these touch points with so many people and these precinct captains in all 99 counties, anderson. the question is will that work tomorrow for ron desantis where he can emerge as a potential alternative. nobody has more at stake than him and he's put his eggs in the iowa basket and we'll see how it shakes out tomorrow. >> now the cold, which is even bad by the midwest winter standard, the winter chill approaching 30s and dangerous weather advisories throughout the state. joining us is chad myers.

republican strategist in iowa who has worked with 4 different presidential campaigns, visit and cofounder of campaign hq, turning out voters nationwide you are in des moines, you know exactly what is is like and i will sure, what are you seeing the ball on the roads as you're driving around in hearing about turnout in the caucuses tomorrow? >> absolutely, roads were significant, once you get out from the gravel without to the county roads and hearts are's raids, things are looking good and only going to get better tomorrow, turnout will be impacted and this would be a good test of candidates organization, a good organization or a caucus campaign will include precinct captains will be working to make sure that everyone is a campaigning candidate, they have a plan to get out and vote, including people with to

to come out into this weather, it's going to make it physically difficult. gravel roads in rural iowa are not plowed, the temperatures are frankly dangerous, especially if you are an elderly person, for example. it may be more dangerous. and those are some of the people that have said -- have told pollsters that they would support donald trump, but as i've talked to sources here on the ground, they have told me that trump supporters have been calling their precinct captains, calling people that they know are going to show up and asking who has got a four-wheel drive vehicle to get them to the polls? i think it's really emblematic of what they learned from their loss here in iowa in 2016 and it also shows you the effort that -- the whole trump team has camped out at the hotel for des moines down the road, including the former president himself who honestly hates spend ago day away from his own bed, his own

we have obviously organized all the sites. we have over 1700 precinct captains that are there. so you think if all of them end up flipping three or four votes. then that starts to be real significant. and we have that infrastructure in place. obviously trump is a known commodity. i haven't seen that from any other candidate. >> steve: i understand your campaign and have you heard from republicans who have publicly endorsed donald trump. and they go, yeah, i did that but i'm going to vote for you. >> the thing be is i think he puts a lot of pressure on these guys to do. >> steve: it's politics. it happens. >> some of them do that because they think it's the path of les resistance. the reality is i'm endorsed by governor reynolds here. who has done a fantastic job. you know, trump campaign in yesterday to iowa. even some of his strongest supporters. they appreciate what governor reynolds did. >> steve: very popular. >> how do you do it like for me, we are all republicans. i want all republicans to do well. there is a republican governor that's endorsed another

having us here. someone from your superer pac told me this weekend that they have knocked on over 930,000 doors. they have almost 1,700 precinct captains on caucus night tonight. do you feel confident that your organization and the people who support you are going to come through tonight? >> i think so. i mean, you know, they have been doing this over many months, building relationships with people, so getting them committed to caucus by the tens of thousands at this point. but then also staying in touch with them, ensuring they're going to come out, and so they have a huge number of people that they're going to be able to turn out tonight, and then having those caucuses organized in the precincts, people are giving speeches at these things. i think some people have underestimated the extent, there's fluidity. but, give them a reason to support me and that could be the difference. i think you're going to see fluidity in the caucus sites itself, and that's why this is kind of an interesting process. it's not just going in punching a ticket and leaving. people are going to think about

team is certainly relying on that for their strategy of a one-two punch between iowa in a second place and trying to push their way into first in new hampshire that comes next. >> there's obviously enthusiasm, but there's also infrastructure, right? ground game. ron desantis has been all in on iowa which makes today, i would say arguably, the most important day of his political life. what are you hearing on the ground, and what about his much vaunted organization on the ground in iowa? can that be the difference? >> reporter: i think it kind of once again leads us to question whether or not the traditional models of campaigning still work in a trump era. you know this. the theory in iowa is get as many people on the ground here as early as yoe you can, get them knocking doors, making relationships in the community, recruiting people to be precinct captains, recruiting people to bring their friends to caucus. in theory ron desantis has done all of that and done it correctly. he's done the second most events in iowa, far more than trump and
