Answer this, what other things should folks be considering in terms of long-term systemic change that doesn t have much to do with zimmerman? i want to point out, first of all, that the verdict itself is the context for bringing all these people together, but the larger focus of our attention should be on the zimmerman mindset. the zimmerman mindset will require robust, engaged, sustained, and long-term re-educating the american public about the difference between an individual who does something and a group of people who share the same racial identity. at the end of the day, that s what got zimmerman into this mess. he stereotyped, he profiled the entire race of african-americans. that is a deeply entrenched historical problem. it was the basis for winning political campaigns at the start of the jim crowe era in the 1980s. it was the basis of the root of social science and the way in which we use predictive, statistical formulas back in the ....

Anyway, as a group, psychiatrists can t predict who will had commit mass things. a lot of times, they ll get 25 times a day do we lock up everybody, what s the role? it turns out that psychiatric diagnosis is not a predictive, a predictive tool. in other words, we can prevent things by taking away people s guns. but it s not a predictive tool. the second problem, jeff swanson at duke has terrific research. mass shootings. what he shows is that we generalize from these very, very rare events, again, we ve only had 30, 40, 50 of these. build policy based on that. we shoot each other. we shoot ourselves. there are 19,000 suicides. there are other questions to be asked beyond which piece of equipment was the person holding. i mean, killing is contextual. there s a lot going on. you talked about the war on ....

He goes, i ll fight them every stret step of the way. this was the leader of the conservative movement. this is the guy they should be actually working after and trying to be like. but instead they re nothing more than little tea party fringe people and they re nuts. they re crazy. okay. dana, cpac also heard from senator marco rubio of florida today. that s the other potential presidential candidate. and as i m sure you know, each of the last three republican presidential nominees, mitt romney, john mccain, and george w. bush all placed either first or second in the cpac straw poll at some point in their bid for the white house. are you expecting this year s straw poll to be just as predictive? may i say, what beautiful music appears to be playing behind you. reporter: yes, i believe it s a funeral dirge they re playing for me, perhaps. the straw poll here has been unpredictable. often these things are hijacked by the likes of ron paul. ....

Frustration. but i think those are oftentimes, we see them as overly predictive of the outcome, of what tends to be more predictive of the outcome, not how nicely the two sides are talking but how close we are to a deadline. you heard from president obama, that it didn t seem to matter. the obsession, getting a deal at the very last minute. others kept saying well, you just watch, i know it looks bad now but if you wait until the stroke of midnight, we ll be there. indeed we are a, but i think th rational people say why is this that we do this at 11:59, and have terrible consequences. all right, ezra klein, stand by if you will. let s bring in huffington post ryan grim, i know you were just ....

I think everyone all around the table about this conversation would agree there is nothing sane about the acts that have happened but i m very torn about this issue, because i think that again, as i was saying before, they tie into very profound stigmatizations. as i was mentioning before, there are issues that are predictive of violence that we know about. they are not mental illness. it s past history of violence, substance abuse, alcohol abuse at the time. those are far, far more predictive of gun violence than mental illness. or being in the drug business. that s one area where you will find a lot of gun violence and if you look at some cities, some urban areas where there are large numbers of gun deaths, it s not because of mental illness. it s because of the drug trade, the drug business, of course, and crime. isn t there a part of it that people who are witnessing and dealing with those environments and who are living through these shootings, then there is an issue with ment ....
