Is out there. and, in part, is shaping things. nobody expects the kind of economic growth that we are going to need to produce enough jobs not only for everybody to keep their job, but for young people coming up. you write in a preface to the new book, you talk about reagan and that sense of optimism and belief in the future. our recent poll indicated that what s really tough is now that so many people are out of work, they don t have much faith in the president s policies to turn things around. that s kind of a death knell for a political party and a president. yes, and i think part of what s coming in just a few weeks in november is probably a rebuke of our current leadership. and i think that might be fairly severe, but the larger issue is that i don t think the american people look at washington and see people who, a, can know what needs to be done and, b, can actually summon the will and grit to do it. they don t see that leadership as likely and so they are ....

Malsise. and that could be a real effect on our politics, prolonged unemployment. yeah, there could. look, i think joe and i were talking before we came out. the biggest change, politically, in my entire lifetime is the fact that the american people now no longer feel that they will be handing on to their country a stronger, better place where their kids will get a job and their kids can get a house. i wouldn t call it pessimism, but a new, sober, almost sadness is out there. and, in part, is shaping things. nobody expects the kind of economic growth that we are going to need to produce enough jobs not only for everybody to keep their job, but for young people coming up. you write in a preface to the new book, you talk about reagan and that sense of optimism and belief in the future. our recent poll indicated that what s really tough is now that so many people are out of work, they don t have much faith in the president s policies to turn things around. that s kind of a death knell ....

If we agree with palin and boehner and mcconnell that it s okay to borrow to stimulate the economy, which is what they re saying after that whole preface stuff, what s the most effective way to borrow to stimulate the economy? well, the most effective thing we can do for stimulus is food stamps. you get $1.71 of stimulus foefr dollar you spend versus the bush tax cuts, which is 32 cents for every dollar you spend on them. but we are in fact cutting stimulus right now or we re cutting food stamps to pay for state and local aid, which is also better than tax cuts. so this is one problem here. the argument the republicans are at least giving to democrats is you don t want to allow a good stimulus like a tax cut to expire during a recession. and they re right about that. people care about this are worried about that. but at the same time they re forcing democrats to cut very effective forms of stimulus and undersell others like state and local aid. so we are in this bit of a pickle here ....

Our chief meteorologist is live in the extreme weather center. how many records today? don t have a full running of all of the smaller towns but i can tell you anywhere from hartford to richmond again today, shepard, records broken. everybody above the triple digits. only real break we saw was 83 degrees in new york and temperatures beginning to fall a tiny, tiny bit. different wind coming off the coast. still extremely warm, though. if you re in new york city, everybody has to get outside. that s what makes it so tough. check out this guy. what s it like shining shoes in the heat? 9 degrees. 90 degrees. it doesn t make a difference. this is my therapy. not only am i the president, i m also a client. ok. is your therapy better in the winter or in the summer? my preface is, i prefer the 90 degrees. the view improves. yeah, that guy don, shep, ....

Supported. so this jobs recovery here is helping to support incomes nationwide. there was a number i saw that really, you know, said that consumer spending was 36 billion in the most recent period but incomes were 32 billion. where are they getting the extra money? you know, people are feeling more confident and dipping into savings maybe. but we have to be careful about that, right? you do. with savings it s interesting. there is an inconvenient truth for the negative story on consumers with savings. the story we ve all heard is that in the middle of the last decade savings rate went negative and really set us up for this recession. lo and behold they revised the numbers and there was no negative savings rate. it went down but it stayed positive. yes. and so what that means for today is that savings doesn t need to go negative in order to have some consumer spending. okay? you can spend money and you don t have to go i think the underlying preface to your concern that, y ....
