The head of Australian power giant AGL has abruptly resigned, saying he is unable to commit to seeing through the company’s plans to break up its coal- and gas-fired power stations from its wider retailing business.
Brett Redman, who has been with AGL for 15 years and CEO for the past two years, has told the board he could not make a “long-term commitment” to overseeing the demerger of the nation’s biggest and oldest energy utility and has resigned, effectively immediately. ....

Energy giant AGL has struck a partnership to assess developing huge hybrid power systems to help decarbonise some of Australia’s most emissions-intensive industrial operations such as mine sites, oil and gas facilities and refineries.
The venture, involving AGL and Finnish manufacturer Wartsila, comes as big changes rock the energy market and power suppliers seek to keep pace with customers’ efforts to slash greenhouse gases and target “net-zero” emissions.
AGL plans to close down its Liddell coal-fired power station in the NSW Hunter Valley by 2023. ....

AGL Energy is set to ramp up its expansion into low-carbon electricity supply for industrial customers, sealing an initial deal to form a venture with Finland’s Wärtsilä to offer “behind-the-meter” hybrid power systems to business.
The systems, available to customers using more than 20 MW of power, would be configured differently depending on whether a customer is connected into the grid but could involve a variety of solar, gas and storage, all overseen by smart energy management controls.
Remote mines are a target for AGL’s latest push into low-carbon energy supply for industrial customers.  ....
