Ben, a seventh grader, qualified for the bee after entering the SCRIPPS spelling bee on Feb. 3 and earning at least 20 of 25 points on a spelling test. He also competed in last year s bee.
About 20 students participated in the Feb. 11 spelling bee, Mike Barth, Fowler School principal of curriculum and instruction, said.
Because of the pandemic, the spelling bee was held on Zoom. The students’ parents were asked to be visible behind the screen to ensure no one could look up a word on Google, said Barth.
Ben will now go to a regional spelling bee in the hopes of qualifying for SCRIPPS National Spelling Bee, Barth said. ....
