The Committee on Prison Reforms has informed the Supreme Court that suicide is a significant contributor to the 817 unnatural deaths in Indian jails from 2017 to 2021. The committee, led by former judge Amitava Roy, has recommended the construction of suicide-resistant barracks. Of the 817 deaths, 660 were suicides, with Uttar Pradesh having the highest number at 101.
