UNIVERSITIES, employers, and local leaders will work together to create thousands of local jobs as the recovery from the pandemic gathers pace. New research by Universities UK (UUK), Universities and the UK’s economic recovery: an analysis of future impact, which was compiled by the National Centre for Entrepreneurship in Education (NCEE), is published today. It predicts that over the next five years universities in the North-East will be involved in research projects with partners worth almost £1 billion; help 725 new businesses and charities to be formed and train more than 10,000 nurses, almost 4,000 medics and 8,000 teachers. The research is published as UUK launches #GettingResults – a campaign to put universities at the heart of the economic and social recovery – with a renewed commitment from universities to do even more to reach out to new partners locally and nationally and deliver even greater impact than currently estimated.

Durham City MP, Mary Foy, has re-established the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG), Friends of Durham University. The group, which was first established by Foy’s predecessor, Roberta Blackman-Wood, is chaired by Mary Foy, and Richard Holden, MP for North-West Durham, Kevan Jones, MP for North Durham, Paul Howell, MP for Sedgefield, and Graham Brady, MP for Altrincham and Sale West, will serve as Vice-Chairs. Peter Gibson, MP for Darlington, will serve as secretary, while Kate Osborne, MP for Jarrow, will be an officer of the group, with Durham University acting as the secretariat. “By re-establishing the APPG, we will be able to increase academia’s role in policy-making and to promote the work of Durham University at a national level.”

His Royal Highness Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, who died today aged 99. The Vice-Chancellor said: “Our community is deeply saddened to learn of the loss of His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh. Our thoughts and best wishes are with Her Majesty The Queen and The Royal Family at this time.” “Durham University is proud to have hosted The Duke of Edinburgh on many occasions, where he met with students and staff and visited Durham Castle and our Queen’s Campus in Stockton. In 1951, His Royal Highness was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Civil Law.” The Bishop of Durham also released a statement paying his respects to Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, who was married to Queen Elizabeth for 73 years.
Durham University has today called upon the Government to “provide clarity on plans for the safe resumption of Covid-secure face-to-face teaching” in Easter Term. The statement follows the Prime Minister’s coronavirus press conference on Monday 5th April, during which the planned liberalisation of Covid-19 restrictions was confirmed for Monday 12th April. In Durham’s statement, Vice-Chancellor and Warden, Professor Stuart Corbridge, said that the University’s “current working assumption is that Government will announce soon that further in person teaching at English universities cannot recommence until Monday 17th May, at the earliest – but this is not yet confirmed.” “I can assure our community that the University remains open, in a Covid-secure way, and that student support and other services are available”
