People buy them in large quantities and businesses store them in tons because it's assumed that onions never go bad, at least not so quickly. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Preventions (CDC) are investigating a salmonella outbreak in 37 states tied to whole, fresh onions.

The agency says interviews with people sickened by the outbreak indicate that 75 percent of them ate or may have eaten raw onions.

The vegetable that's known for making people cry is now making hundreds of people sick across the U.S.; according to the CDC, 652 cases of illnesses have been traced back to a salmonella outbreak caused by various types of imported onions from Mexico and distributed by ProSource Inc. 

The FDA is investigating a multistate Salmonella outbreak linked to whole, fresh onions that has led to more than 100 hospitalizations.
