On Tuesday’s Backchat, we’re talking about waste management in Hong Kong, especially waste separation bins.
The Environmental Protection Department has been removing the three-coloured recycling bins from roadsides in urban areas since June this year, and is aiming to encourage citizens to switch to community recycling facilities instead, saying such a move would improve efficiency.
It says the volume of material collected from the bins for recycling is generally low, and passers-by often mistakenly use them to deposit rubbish and containers with leftover food or drinks.
As of the end of October, the department had removed about 300 sets of recycling bins in various urban districts, leaving about 500 sets in the built-up areas and 1,000 in rural areas.
However, some environmental groups have complained that the change of policy has been undertaken with a lack on consultation.
After 9.15am, we’ll talk about the second-generation BioNTech vaccine which specifically targets the Omicron coronavirus variant.
And at 9.25am, we'll be joined by RTHK sports reporter Atom Cheung with the latest on the football World Cup.
