Hordes of tourists seen arriving in Baguio this Holy Week

WELCOME BACK. Tourists once again get to enjoy the calming atmosphere at Burnham Park in Baguio City's central business district in this undated photo. The city government on Monday (April 11, 2022) said it is prepared for the influx of tourists during the Holy Week break, with over 80,000 traveler registrations to Baguio approved as of April 7. (PNA file photo) BAGUIO CITY - The city government is bracing for the expected influx of tourists in the country's summer capital during the Holy Week break and throughout the rest of the dry season. Aileen Refuerzo, Public Information Office chief, in a phone interview on Monday, said "Baguio City expects hordes of tourists for the Holy Week break." She said that data provided by the City Tourism Office shows that as of April 7, the city has more than 80,000 approved travel registrations arriving from April 8 to 17. Approved travel registration figures as of April 7 are as follows: Apr. 8 - 14,491; Apr. 9 - 15,934; Apr. 10 - 5,329; Apr. 11 - 3,515; Apr. 12 - 3,142; Apr. 13 - 7,998; Apr. 14 - 19,342; Apr. 15 - 5,393; Apr. 16 - 3,941; and Apr. 17 - 1,379. "Ine-expect na tataas pa 'yan in the coming days. Kadalasan, habang lumalapit ang araw, mas dumadami ang nagre-register (Registrations usually increase as the holidays come closer so we expect that more will be registering)," she added. The official said that while the number of registration for visitors arriving on Maundy Thursday, April 14, has reached 19,342, the figure is still expected to reach as high as 40,000 because the city has not imposed a limit on the number of travelers. Ensuring safety While the city government has not set a ceiling for tourist arrivals, Mayor Benjamin Magalong had earlier said the city and establishment owners will assure that the minimum health and safety protocols will be observed. He also asked the public to make it a personal responsibility to observe the protocols for their protection and that of the others. Like in past Holy Week commemorations, the Baguio City Police Office (BCPO) has once again tapped volunteers to help in assuring safety and orderliness in the city. Baguio City's calendar of summer vacation activities is back via the "#Baguio Summerfeels SUMVAC 2022." Refuerzo said the city has come up with several activities ranging from civic, spiritual, and Holy Week-related; as well as activities on nature, culture and heritage, sports, and tourism. She said the local government hopes that the Baguio Flower Festival, which resumed in March after a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic and attended by thousands, would usher in a sustained momentum in the city's transitioning to the new normal. No Xmas gatherings amid Omicron threat: Magalong

KEEP SAFE. The city government of Baguio again called on residents to observe the health and safety protocols against Covid-19 as they enjoy the holiday celebrations. Mayor Benjamin Magalong said on Tuesday (Dec. 7, 2021) the public's cooperation is important amid the threat of the Omicron variant. (PNA file photo) BAGUIO CITY - Mayor Benjamin Magalong again reminded residents here not to hold gatherings and parties this Christmas Season to prevent a surge in coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) cases, especially with the threat of the Omicron variant. "I am hoping that Omicron will not hit us this Christmas but looking at the latest developments, there is a big possibility. I don't like to spoil our Christmas but I hope we will be spared," the mayor told the media on Tuesday. He said like the Delta variant, it is possible that Omicron would also enter Baguio City. Magalong said while everybody enjoys the Yuletide Season, there should be continuous observance of the safety protocols to avoid problems after having fun. The mayor, however, expressed confidence that the city can deal with the Omicron the way it did the Delta variant. "I hope will be able to suppress this but we can be confident that we will be able to handle it with the positive developments on our front, the readiness of our control systems, and the lessons and experience that we had with the Delta variant," Magalong said. He said Omicron, the fifth variant of concern, appears to be three times more transmissible than Delta in the affected countries, although there are indications that the cases are not severe. "We will be watching the developments on Omicron to guide us in our action plan. The next two weeks will be critical in ascertaining its features," he said. Meanwhile, Aileen Refuerzo, Public Information Office chief, said "as cases dipped, the city weathering the Delta scourge and with the eased up quarantine protocols, the city reopened its badly hit tourism industry and geared up for a better Christmas". She said while the city has prepared a low-key Christmas celebration, the local government will cancel the activities when the situation calls for it. "The city's action plan will be dynamic. Our protocols are a little lax since we are on Alert Level 2 but if the Omicron risk gets higher, then expect us to again step up our restrictions," Refuerzo said. On Monday, a Health Services Office-Baguio report showed that the city has 65 active Covid-19 cases with the addition of five logged on the same day. There was a total of 29,199 who recovered and 714 who died since the virus was detected in the country in March 2020. (PNA) }
