9/11/2001 and went over to raven rock, the underground facility the pentagon uses in case of attack or emergency. the other name i would mention on that list that a lot of people know about is pete hoekstra, a former congressman as well. a longtime member of the house intelligence committee. he's the ambassador to the netherlands now. >> kellogg served under h.r. mcmaster. joe johns, thanks very much. thousands of north carolinians will finally have representation in congress more than ten months after the 2018 midterm elections. last night republican state senator dan bishop narrowly defeated democrat dan mccready in the special election for the state's 9th district. north carolina, you should remember, was forces to redo the election after there were ballot fraud allegations and charges linked to the 2018 gop campaign.
points. it's a traditionally republican district in every sense. and yet republicans were still forced to plow millions of dollars into this race. it required president trump to come here for a last-minute swing through the district on monday to help push dan bishop the republican over the finish line. and already this morning, bishop is talking about president trump's impact on the race. and he does give him quite a bit of credit for helping him win last night. take a listen. >> i've only been in six months. and really, just six weeks did we have a level playing field financially with a campaign on the other side that was running with, you know, $10 million, $12 million of outside money, seeking to flip the seat blue. so we were far behind. we were making progress, but the president and vice president pence coming in, i think it put us over the top. >> and he's right about that. and republicans are cautioning us to not take too much into the
immigration. dan bishop in his final hours is also talking a lot about the issue. it's the same playbook that republicans used in the final days of the 2018 election, so we'll see if it works here today. hallie? >> leann caldwell, thank you. steve kornacki, you're over at the big board. let me put up your headline from this morning. this north carolina house race will show if donald trump's coalition is falling apart. explain that? >> yeah, it's interesting. so leann mentions how republicans closed the 2018 midterms nationally and this is what it resulted in, in this district we're talking about. the republican candidate here on election day 2018, seemed to win, seemed to -- a very narrow 905 votes. and of course, all of those allegations, revelations of election fraud that emerged in the subsequent months. they invalidated this election. the seat's been open since then. this is the last election of the 2018 midterms. but as you say, this is also a window potentially into 2020. and why is that?
at this precinct specifically, there are about 4,000 registered voters. about 1,000 have already voted early. but turnout is much higher than expected so far, especially for a special election. and we've talked to a lot of these voters this morning and we've heard a common theme president that the president is on their mind. >> i'll give him credit for the economy, but i mean, he's going off the walls. i want to live. i have little kids to live for. and i feel like he's putting our country in harm's way. >> i voted for dan bishop. >> why? >> because i think we need to continue along the path that we've taken in this country. i think president trump's done a great job and i think that dan bishop will continue that. >> the president, of course, was in this district last night trying to push dan bishop over the finish line. last night at trump's rally, he really leaned into this issue of
