Around 90 postal workers are now isolating at home after Peel Public Health used a new section 22 order to shut down a shift at a mail facility in Mississauga.
Over the past week, 12 employees have tested positive for COVID-19 at the Toronto Exchange Office within Canada Post’s Gateway West facility at 4567 Dixie Road.
In a statement, Canada Post said it informed employees on Tuesday that Peel Public Health has directed that Shift 3 (afternoon shift) employees in the office must leave work and self-isolate for 10 days.
The Postal service said that it is working with public health and they received the order for the workers to go home and isolate today. ....

Canada Post shift in Peel Region ordered shut down during COVID-19 outbreak

Peel Public Health has issued an order to shut down a shift at the Canada Post Gateway West facility, ordering some 90 workers and managers to stay home and self-isolate for 10 days.
The move comes as Canada Post facilities have been hit with outbreaks across Toronto and Peel, including the death of a worker at a mail processing plant in Toronto’s east end.
In a letter to employees, Canada Post says that the Shift 3 employees in the Toronto Exchange Office on Dixie Road must leave the workplace until Friday, May 7.
“Peel Public Health gave us this direction under [its] Section 22 order on workplaces with COVID-19. Public Health says this is necessary to contain further spread of COVID-19 at this stage, keep our workplace and families safe, and protect our healthcare system,” the notice reads. ....

Nearly a month since the death of her 62-year-old brother, Amanda Yeung Collucci is calling on Canada Post to provide answers about a COVID-19 outbreak at his workplace.
All employers should really take a serious role and responsibility if there s any cases happening in the workplace they need to do a very thorough investigation to find out where it s being originated, said Collucci.
The city councillor in Markham, Ontario said she has received many calls from constituents since her brother s death last month asking for assurances that their own workplaces are safe. ....

Ontario Canada Post facility with massive COVID-19 outbreak will now conduct mandatory testing

Amid a massive COVID-19 outbreak at Canada Post’s Mississauga, Ont. facility, on-site mandatory testing for the disease is now being carried out.
Since the first day of this year, 273 positive cases of the novel coronavirus have been confirmed at the Gateway facility, including 23 since Wednesday.
“Peel Public Health has now directed that Canada Post arrange mandatory COVID-19 testing for all employees who work anywhere in the Gateway facility, including those who have already had a test,” a spokesperson for the Crown corporation, Phil Legault, said in an update provided on Saturday.
The on-site mandatory testing began on Friday with Gateway East, Shift 2, Legault said, and will continue on a “larger scale” scale next week. ....
