By Lois Barber I have grown carrots, but mainly for the Queen Anne Lace type of flowers they get in their second year. I can buy carrots ready to eat fairly inexpensively, with none of the work of planting, weeding and watering that go into growing them. Not only that, but carrots need a truly soft soil or the result will be a gnarly, misshapen vegetable that children will decide resembles a witch’s fingers and will be too squeamish to eat. Trust me about that one. Although I no longer grow carrots, I enjoyed the parsnips I recently cooked so much that I am going to buy a packet of seed and try growing them, although I know they are less easy to grow than their carrot cousins. ....
