GUWAHATI: The influential students’ body, All Assam Students’ Union (Aasu), will issue directives to its members at the state executive meeting on March 21, to indirectly campaign in favour of the two new regional parties, the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) and Raijor Dal, for the upcoming assembly election in the state.
Aasu, which claims to be an ‘apolitical’ organization, for the first time took a ‘political stand’ by backing the formation of AJP last year to oust the BJP-AGP combine from power. The mass movement against the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Act, which started in December 2019, gave rise to a call for a new political party. Aasu and another allied organization, the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP), played a proactive role in the formation of AJP. GUWAHATI: Chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal will a face stiff challenge if he steps out of his Majuli constituency, AJP president Lurinjyoti Gogoi said.
“BJP will incur heavy losses in upper and central Assam, from where it won maximum seats in 2016. Sonowal will face a serious contest if he comes out of Majuli, a Scheduled Tribe (ST) seat. In ST reserve constituencies, we have limited options of fielding candidates,” Gogoi said, adding that the AJP-Rajor Dal combine will “prove Congress’s BJP-B-team barb” wrong.
Gogoi said he is ready to fight the elections from Duliajan constituency in Dibrugarh, where indigenous communities as well as tea tribes play a vital role. Raijor Dal, on the other hand, is planning to field its president Akhil Gogoi from Teok in Jorhat district or Sivasagar seat or both. ....
