A New York City police officer was shot in the arm Tuesday night by a man who was out on the streets despite an extensive criminal background, city officials said.

Rameek Smith, 25, died at St. Barnabas Hospital about 3:30 a.m., an hour after the cop he shot in the left arm, Officer Dennis Vargas, was released from Lincoln Hospital, authorities said.
An NYPD officer was shot in the arm during a shootout with a career criminal in the Bronx, according to police. The gunman was shot and killed.

Prosecutors requested $50,000 bail after Rameek Smith, 25, was busted while armed with a .32 caliber pistol two years ago in Coney Island — but the request was rejected in October 2020 by Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Denny Chun, said a spokesman for the borough district attorney.
The comments from the mayor came during a late-night address addressing the Tuesday night shooting, which saw suspect Rameek Smith (at right) shoot officer Dennis Vargas in the arm.
