Willie J. "Chick" Carter, who was one of Winston-Salem's first eight Black firefighters, died Wednesday. Carter was 95.

Updated: 12:58 PM EST Mar 1, 2021 WXII12.com Web Staff City officials in Winston-Salem held a brief ceremony Monday morning to unveil an honorary street sign to mark the 70th anniversary of the Winston-Salem Fire Department’s first Black firefighters.The firefighters reported for duty on March 1, 1951, at the original Fire Station No. 4 located at 214 N. Dunleith Ave. Monday's ceremony was held near that site at the corner of East Third Street and Dunleith Avenue. The old fire station has since been converted to a church.
