Endowed with twelve wheels (that represent the 12 Zodiac signs) and driven by seven horses (that symbolise the seven colours in the rainbow), the Sun God's chariot has his half-brother, Aruna, as the charioteer. It is said that the Sun starts moving towards the north in the north-eastern direction on this day. Hence the name Ratha Saptami.
