One of Queensland's top road policing officers has revealed the harrowing moment he knew his little sister had been killed in a car crash.
Acting Chief Superintendent Ray Rohweder was 17 and working as a teller at a Commonwealth Bank branch when a family friend called to say his 16-year-old sister Donna had been involved in a crash south of Brisbane.
"I went down just as she was being put in the ambulance, and I remember I tried to get into the ambulance," Supt Rohweder said.
Another family member had been at the wheel when the station wagon rolled and a metal toolbox, which had been placed in the boot of the car, flew forwards and struck his sister in the back of the head.

A horror weekend on Queensland roads has tipped the state's death toll to 100, the worst start to a year in more than a decade.
The shocking milestone has prompted an urgent plea from one of the state's top cops, Acting Chief Superintendent Ray Rohweder, who said the figure was both "concerning" and "heartbreaking".
100 people have lost their lives on Queensland roads so far this year. It is a significant spike since last year, where 78 fatalities were recorded in the same period.
"It's been many, many years since we've had 100 lives lost this time of the year, it's just horrible," Acting Chief Supt Rohweder said.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: State's dire road toll prediction

Road rules; Keys to safety
Police fear Queensland could be headed for one of its worst road tolls in more than a decade, with drivers put on notice for making “absolutely stupid decisions” behind the wheel.
More than 80 people have died in traffic crashes so far this year — at least 20 more than the same time in 2020.
Acting Chief Superintendent Ray Rohweder said 25 of the fatalities were motorcyclists.
“Three hundred lives lost is quite possible this year unless we really start turning things around … and it’s been well over a decade since we’ve had 300 people killed on Queensland roads,” he said.” By Lily Nothling 8/03/2021 ABC
