Olympia Mill Village Museum In the first half of the 19th century, Columbia was growing. Government and commerce were driving industrialization, and the textile industry was rapidly expanding. Amid this “New South” economy, plans were drawn up for an audacious mill and village along the banks of the Congaree River just outside the city limits.
