Intensive care and cancer services have joined the picket lines. our health reporter, katherine da costa reports. from london to bristol, liverpool to gloucestershire, for the third time this year members of the royal college of nursing are back on strike in half of england s hospitals. it will be the first time some nurses who work in emergency departments, intensive care and counselling services, join the action. priya, a specialist cancer nurse, will be on the picket line. the kinds of offers we are getting from the government, now that we have moved into a time of inflation, are just not compatible with being able to live, to exist, to pay our rent, to buy food, to look after our families, and that is a cut too far. we have absorbed the cuts for ten years. and now, enough is enough. after concerns over patient safety, the rcn has now agreed to raise staffing levels nationally to protect critical areas such as major trauma and intensive care. health leaders have welcomed ....

To vote on whether it accepts the agreement that we negotiated with them. i think it is right to wait for the nhs staff council to come to that decision and i think this strike is premature and disrespectful to those trade unions that will be meeting on tuesday. went we want it? it is expected the majority of nhs unions will back the deal at that meeting, with ministers having agreed to introduce it if they do. katharinejoins us from outside thejohn radcliffe hospital in oxford now. other health unions are meeting tomorrow and they have accepted the pay deal, some of them and they are meeting ministers, does that leave those striking a little isolated? it is the rcn and the unite union is have both rejected what is on the ....

Meeting on tuesday in order to vote on the fair and reasonable settlement that we agreed with them some weeks ago. there are 1a unions being asked to accept the government s pay offer, and ministers have said if the majority bracket, if the majority back it, it will go through. as we have heard, the rcn has said no. that union represents around two thirds of uk nurses. also, another union, unite, has also rejected the deal. but several others have said yes. gmb, one of the big ones, as well as unions that represent midwives, ambulance workers and also physiotherapists. whenever we talk about this story, it is important to look at the numbers we are actually talking about. this represents salaries of nurses ranging in speciality. so we have a newly qualified nurse here earning around £30,000. to put that into context, that is less than 40,000 us dollars a year. if we go down to a specialist nurse, like the one we heard from earlier, ....

The move, but worry the disruption will further hamper efforts to tackle backlogs, something the union disputes. those waiting lists were not created by nursing staff. the reason nursing staff are selflessly standing up for our patients and taking strike action is for that very reason, those waiting lists. seven plus million people sitting on them. and why are they there? because of the tens of thousands of vacant nursing posts in place in england. we need those posts filled so we can get our patients off the waiting lists. and we won t do that unless we pay nurses a proper and decent wage. the strike was called earlier this month after rcn members rejected a government offer of a 5% pay rise for this year, and a one off payment to top up last year s salary. members of the unite union have also rejected a plea deal. but other unions representing ambulance staff, midwives and physios have accepted the offer. we will now get together on tuesday, the nhs staff council will meet, to vote o ....

I have at times been just so busy with trying to do tasks that i m not able to stop and give someone a glass of water. you go in, you re understaffed. you re seeing all this suffering that is completely unnecessary. and you know that when you go back tomorrow, that s going to be there again. so i think that is what s causing burn out and that s what s causing people like myself and lots of other nurses to just leave. 0verworked and underpaid! we deserve a living wage! the royal college of nursing pointed to good hope hospital and the latest care quality commission inspection showing it was 78 nurses short. although the impact of the action will reduce because they can t legally strike on tuesday, the nhs accepts it will still be difficult. so we may have to reschedule some appointments and procedures where necessary, but they will be rebooked immediately where possible. unfortunately, these strikes will have a significant impact upon planned and routine care. the government says it w ....
