Literacy crisis: Children are far behind in learning to read and the problem is deepening across South Africa.
In an attempt to help pupils to read with understanding, the provincial department of education launched the Eastern Cape reading strategy at the East London ICC on Tuesday. The campaign, announced at an event led by deputy minister Dr Makgabo Reginah Mhaule and MEC Fundile Gade, was initiated in response to a call by President Cyril Ramaphosa for all pupils in grade 4 and aged 10 to be taught to read with meaning.
