Waters started the race from pole position and had opened up a healthy lead in the opening laps before a safety car triggered by De Pasquale colliding with a wall in The Cutting changed both drivers' days. A sluggish pitstop under the safety car allowed Van Gisbergen to jump Waters for the lead, with the Tickford Racing driver eventually rejoining in fourth place. The reason why his pitstop was so slow became evident just two laps later however when Waters pitted again and drove his Ford Mustang straight into the garage.
