Road safety is a major issue in India and this is evident by the fact that our country reports one the highest number of road accidents in the world. According to a World Bank report, India accounts for 11 per cent of the global road accident deaths -- the highest in the world. This is why the Indian government has been making efforts to make roads and cars safer for the people. In line with this, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has mandated all new four-wheeler models in the country to come equipped with dual front airbags. The existing models in carmakers' lineup will have to comply with these norms by 31 August, 2021. Along with this, some stricter safety norms are being considered for four-wheelers in the country. In a road safety webinar conducted by ASSOCHAM, Reji Mathai, Director, Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), said that some new safety provisions could be made compulsory for four-wheelers in the country. He noted that provisions like lane departure warning system, emergency call (e-call) system, and advanced brake alert system are certain new regulatory norms for vehicles that are under discussion.
