In December, the Japanese arm of the global conservation group, World Wide Fund for Nature, presented an action plan to support the country s goal of carbon neutrality by 2050. The WWF is the latest group to lobby the Japanese government since it announced the target in October.
The WWF s plan involves a different timetable – and drastic changes to how Japan meets its energy needs. NHK World spoke to one of the organization s energy analysts about the group s proposal.
Abandoning the use of coal
WWF Japan energy policy analyst Konishi Masako leads the team that made the action plan. In the proposal, they say Japan must increase its greenhouse gas emissions reduction target for 2030. They say this would require a drastic change in the country s existing energy mixture plan, and would necessitate a total abolition of coal use. ....
