The Belmond City Council decided Monday night to close off the north end of 4th Avenue NE until the Highway 69 bridge project is finished this fall.

   The north end of 4th Avenue NE, which many local folks call “the dump road” was officially closed to traffic Monday night by the Belmond City Council.   “There’s too much traffic that’s trying to avoid the official Highway 69 bridge detour,” said Public Works Director Justin Fournier. “Lots of vehicles using 4th Avenue NE shouldn’t be.”   The north end of the street is gravel, and the heavy truck traffic is beating it up.   “My officers have stopped several trucks that have turned off the official detour ...

   Complaints about heavy traffic due to the Highway 69 detour have kept local phone lines busy. Police Chief Rick McDaniel told the Belmond City Council Monday night that complaints are coming from West Main Street, 6th Avenue NW, East Main Street, and Luick’s Lane.   “People haven’t figured out the detour yet,” he said. “It always takes a while.
