Braathen beats boyhood buddy McGrath to win World Cup slalom

ADELBODEN, Switzerland (AP) — Close friends since childhood, Lucas Braathen and Atle Lie McGrath fulfilled their shared dream Sunday by finishing 1-2 in a World Cup ski race. Braathen, who is two days older than his fellow 22-year-old McGrath, got the win in a slalom to extend Norway’s dominating run in the discipline. Sporting his trademark painted fingernails — mostly black with one yellow smile emoji — Braathen retained his first-run lead to finish 0.71 seconds ahead. Linus Strasser of Germany was 0.92 back in third.

ADELBODEN, Switzerland (AP) — Marco Odermatt carried his remarkable streak in giant slalom to another World Cup win Saturday in his home nation’s classic race staged in unseasonably warm weather. Odermatt, the Olympic champion, protected his first-run lead in fading light and even extended it with the fastest second-leg time to finish 0.73 seconds ahead of Henrik Kristoffersen.

Kranjec leads 1st run in Alta Badia as Odermatt struggles

LA VILLA, Italy (AP) — Olympic silver medalist Zan Kranjec led the opening run of the Alta Badia giant slalom on Sunday while overall World Cup leader Marco Odermatt struggled in ninth place. Kranjec, a Slovenian skier, posted a significant advantage ahead of two Norwegians. Henrik Kristoffersen stood 0.60 seconds behind Kranjec in second and Lucas Braathen was 0.73 back in third.
