Lloyd among newcomers for U.S. women's pro volleyball league

DALLAS (AP) — Volleyball players Carli Lloyd and Alisha Glass Childress, who helped the U.S. women win bronze at the 2016 Rio Olympics, are among the newcomers for the second year of a pro volleyball team in their home country. Athletes Unlimited is returning to Dallas and will have fans at Fair Park Coliseum for the first time for a unique indoor league that rewards individual stats over team results. The five-week season starts Wednesday.

Shiffrin 2nd in World Cup giant slalom; Vlhová skis out

LENZERHEIDE, Switzerland (AP) — Mikaela Shiffrin earned a chance to extend her lead in the overall World Cup standings Sunday when closest rival Petra Vlhová failed to finish the first run of a giant slalom. Shiffrin was second-fastest down the steep course at Lenzerheide, just 0.11 seconds behind Olympic champion Sara Hector. Tessa Worley, a two-time world championships gold medalist, was third with 0.16 to make up in the second run in the afternoon. No other racer was within a half-second of the top three.

Russians to compete as 'neutral athletes' at Paralympics

Russians and Belarusians at the Winter Paralympics in Beijing will compete as “neutral athletes” because of their countries' roles in the war against Ukraine, the International Paralympic Committee said Wednesday. Russian athletes had already been slated to compete as RPC, short for Russian Paralympic Committee, as punishment for the state-sponsored doping scandal at the 2014 Sochi Olympics and a subsequent cover-up.

5-time Olympic medalist Jansrud to retire from ski racing

OSLO, Norway (AP) — Five-time Olympic medalist Kjetil Jansrud will end his ski racing career at home in Norway on Saturday. The 36-year-old Jansrud wrote on Instagram on Monday that he will finish at the course where he got the first of his 23 World Cup wins. “I am, however, very glad I get to choose to retire in Kvitfjell, where I won my first in 2012 and where I’ve raced in front of family and friends every year since,” Jansrud wrote.
